Congressional Art Competition

The 2008 Congressional Art Competition for Virginia's Second District is now closed. Thank you to all the students who submitted entries. The winner will be announced soon.

Each year, Members of Congress hold contests within their districts to choose winning pieces of art by High School students to be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building, a prominent thoroughfare on Capitol Hill.  This contest is a way of showcasing the artistic and creative talents of young people from across the nation.  As in the past, the winning entry from the Second District will be sent to Washington, D.C., and will be displayed in the halls of the Capitol for one year along with the winning entries from other Congressional Districts from across the country. Students interested in submitting a piece for consideration may drop their work at either the Virginia Beach or Eastern Shore office during business hours on or before April 30. Congresswoman Drake will select the winner personally.

Rep. Thelma Drake is proud to continue this contest. Here is an example of a past winner:

Ms. Elizabeth Sampson

Norfolk Christian School

Title of Work: “Zambian Orphans”

Elizabeth's piece was inspired from the time she spent in Zambia last summer working with and running soccer camps for HIV/AIDS orphans.  The two children in the drawing are orphans struck with the disease.  Elizabeth hopes to promote interest in the ongoing needs of these children.
